Region 2 Superintendents, I am preparing to embark...

Hi All,
I am preparing to embark on an interesting physical and professional challenge and hope that you might be interested in being part of it - or following along via the Internet.
Beginning next Tuesday, June 19 and concluding June 28, I am going to attempt to ride my bicycle around CTAP Region 2 - the CTAP Region 2 Ride for Resources- hitting all nine county offices within approximately seven riding days. The trip is close to 775 miles and covers a variety of geographic areas - including mountains, high desert, the upper SacramentoValley, and foothills surrounding the valley. Basically, I am going to ride a ring around the region averaging 100 plus miles per day.
I have to take a side trip to San Francisco after the third day and also attend a meeting for one day near the end of the ride.
I am doing this for both professional and personal reasons. Professionally, I am using the trip to:
  1. Create a Virtual Field Trip (VFT) of the nine counties within CTAP Region 2.
  2. Raise awareness of CTAP services and resources.
  3. Promote the CTAP Region 2 Summer Technology Leadership Conference (STLC) - approximately 200+ teachers attend annually.
  4. Build partnerships and sponsorships with companies/organizations that provide quality digital resources that support teaching and learning.
You can track the trip via CTAP Region 2 Ride for Resources blog: http://ctapregion2.blogspot.com
Images, video, audio, and text will be updated on a regular basis throughout the trip. Gene Arnold is going to accompany me via car and carry technologies that can capture images, videos, audio and upload to a web-presence as we travel. Ideally, we will document progress and also stop at various points of historic, scientific, geographic, and geologic interest throughout the region.  People can also make comments and interact with us through the blog.
The regional awareness piece includes delivery of CTAP Region 2 information, sponsor-based resources promoting the support of each sponsor, and updates on the CTAP Region 2 STLC. http://stlc.pbwiki.com
I see a win-win relationship with CTAP and sponsoring partnerships developed as a result of these efforts. Together we leverage resources to provide optimum learning opportunities. So far I have received confirmed sponsorship from Discovery Education, CaliforniaStreaming, and netTrekker. Each sponsor is contributing a different level of product support. I have feelers out with several other providers.
Ongoing resource promotion would be included as part of the VFT and also in CTAP professional development support for the schools that receive the sponsor resources. CTAP would also develop case studies highlighting the successful use of sponsor related resources.
If possible, I would like to take a picture with each of the county superintendents or a representative of each county office along the route. I realize schedule conflicts may not permit everyone to participate - but I hope someone from each office can be around.  The tentative schedule is:
  • Tuesday 6/19- Depart Oroville (Butte COE) early AM; arrive in Quincy (Plumas COE) in the afternoon; and push on to Susanville hoping for arrival before it gets dark. This is a very long day- and may end in Quincy.
  • Wednesday 6/20- Depart Susanville (Lassen COE) early AM and arrive in Alturas before dark.
  • Thursday 6/21- Depart Alturas (Modoc COE) early AM arrive Tulelake in the evening. (I know Tulelake  doesn’t have a county office - but it  is about halfway to Yreka)
  • Friday 6/22 - Off day -  drive to San Francisco
  • Saturday 6/23 - Return to Tulelake
  • Sunday 6/24 - Tulelake to Yreka
  • Monday 6/25 - Depart Yreka (Siskiyou COE) early AM and arrive in Weaverville before dark
  • Tuesday 6/26 - Depart Weaverville (Trinity COE) early AM and arrive in Redding before dark (going through Hayfork, Platina, Igo and Ono to avoid Highway 299.)
  • Wednesday 6/27 - Off day - drive to meeting in Yreka
  • Thursday 6/28 - Depart Redding (Shasta COE) early AM, arrive Red Bluff (Tehama COE) late morning, arrive Orland (Glenn County Media Center) late afternoon, and push on through Chico to Oroville before dark.
As long as there are no physical, mechanical, or mental breakdowns (already questionable), I look forward to seeing you in the next couple of weeks.

Gene,

Paul, best of luck on your drive. I see you are planning to arrive in Yreka on the 24th. My carriage driving club will be holding a drive (horses and carriages) out in the Shasta Valley Wildlife Area in Montague that day. Gene, you know where it is. Anyway, if you want to, feel free to stop by. I am the sponsor and organizer of the carriage drive and will be swamped with sponsor/organizer stuff that day so won't be able get to the COE for a photo. Our registration tent and parking area will be in Parking Lot #2 in the wildlife area, so come on in!

Wow, Gene! What a great project! What a coincidence, we plan on being in Susanville at Lassen College
with Zak for a American Legion double header on the 19th (5:00 and 7:30). Good luck with all your travels.
I will keep tabs.

For sure I'll be following the Quest. I expect pictures & or /video of the Giants/Yankees, too. Might be a fun thing to add on. Have a great time with Paul... and don't fall asleep at the wheel! lol

Great idea and effort Paul! After all the tech plans, I am amazed you have the energy left for this kind of undertaking.

Adventures are great with friends- and you both are in good hands, only wish I could go on part of the odyssey. It will be fun to weave this into a part of my curriculum for fall – the wheels are turning…
